Some Things to Consider Before Buying a Hot Tub

Here are a few things to think about before purchasing a hot tub or spa. A consideration of these items will insure your spa is safe and efficient.

The first thing to consider is the site of your spa. For safety, spas should not be placed within ten feet of power lines running overhead. You should also make sure that access to the equipment panel of your spa is not blocked. Also make sure that you meet all city and local safety codes.

The second thing to consider is the foundation the spa will rest on. A foundation that is goo and solid is required to support the weight of the spa, as well as the water and people in it. An inadequate foundation can cause the spa to settle and crack. It is highly recommended that you consult with a licensed contractor or structural engineer to insure a level, solid foundation. It is also important that the path to and around your spa allows for service access.

A licensed electrician should also be consulted to insure that the electrical circuitry of your spa is properly installed and up to code. If your spa runs on 240 volts, it must be hard wired to the power supply. The power supplied to any spa must be from a dedicated circuit and not one that is shared with other appliances or lights. Aluminium wire should never be used, only copper wire with appropriate insulation. The electrical supply for the spa must include a switch or circuit breaker with ready accessibility to the spa’s occupant, but at least five feet away from the spa water.

Following these recommendations will help keep your spa or hot tub safe and operational.
